October – Mental Health Awareness

Cal Poly is highlighting mental and emotional health during the month of October. Key campus partners such as Campus Health & Wellbeing, PULSE, ASI Recreational Sports, and ASI Student Government are hosting a wide range of events to educate the campus community about mental health issues.

We invite students, faculty, and staff to participate in these campus wide efforts to further promote an environment where mental health is no longer stigmatized but normalized as a component to our wellbeing.

Calendar Events

Friday, October 6: National Depression Screening Day @ Dexter Lawn

Our Peer Health Education team PULSE is offering FREE depression screenings on Dexter Lawn from 12pm to 2pm on Friday. Be sure to stop by and get a free screening – just like getting a regular physical health checkup, a mental health checkup is just as important!

Tuesday, October 10“Expressive Self-Portraits” Featuring Jesse from Water Color Wednesdays @ Kennedy Library.

Art is a powerful tool for stress reduction, self-representation and reflection.  PULSE and Kennedy Library are partnering to bring you a special watercolor workshop, “Expressive Self-Portraits” in the Library Atrium from 11am to 1pm. This workshop is a free, drop-in art activity in support of mental emotional wellbeing.

ASI Student Government, Campus Health & Wellbeing, and PULSE are hosting Buck the Stigma from October 16 – 19. This event aims to de-stigmatize mental health issues, increase awareness of on and off-campus resources, and encourage students, staff, and faculty to take care of their mental emotional wellbeing. Events and activities are happening throughout the week on Dexter Lawn or the UU so be sure to follow ASI Student Government, Campus Health & Wellbeing, and PULSE on social media to get the latest updates! The themes for each day:

Pam and Ed Reuling, parents of Mark S. Reuling (’89, CAED), created a memorial endowment to honor their son who lost his life to bipolar disorder about four years after his graduation from Cal Poly.  Each year the Mark Reuling Volleyball Tournament aims to raise funds for the Reuling Memorial Endowment and to raise awareness for mental health prevention.

The tournament comprises of both a student division and a faculty/staff division and is open to all students, staff and faculty. Participants can register teams of 6 players (faculty/staff division) and 4 players (student division) for the tournament at ASI Registration or visit the membership services desk at the Recreation Center. The staff/faculty portion of the event will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Recreation Center. For more information about the tournament contact Sean Pellerin at speller@calpoly.edu or 6-7501.

Tuesday, October 24: Mental Health Documentary Screening

Stop by PULSE Bldg. 27 – Lower Level during your lunch (from 11:30am to 1:30pm) to watch a documentary produced by a former Cal Poly student. Come and learn more about mental health issues from a student’s perspective. We will provide popcorn and drinks.

We hope to see you at some of these events as we continue to foster a culture of health and wellbeing at Cal Poly. #bewell
